Indiana vets Civil War ladder badge
Andersonville PoW
Clean original with St. Louis maker marked reverse.  George Slusser served as a Private in the 7th Battery, Indiana Light Artillery.  He was taken prisoner at Chickamauga in 1863 and held captive at the infamous Andersonville Prison in Georgia.
The badge is accompanied by a large research file that is the sad story of a young man in the service of his country, taken prisoner and held in the most horrid of conditions.
His post war life, see research below, tells of physical and mental illness including a suicide attempt and his total disability by his 50's.  Fruitless attempts to get further disability pension continued until his death at age 62 in 1913.
