A GUIDE TO LOCAL ISSUE U.S. SERVICE &
VICTORY MEDALS WITH VALUES.

Website edition

         SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR & PHILIPPINE INSURRECTION

MEXICAN BORDER SERVICE

WORLD WAR ONE

WORLD WAR TWO

AND THE KOREAN CONFLICT.

 By

Andrew H. Lipps

Introduction:
It is important to note that this is a guide to values based on reported observations of actual medals.  No hypothesis or ‘guestimates’ have been used to determine values of medals not actually noted offered for sale.  Where personal opinion has been added is in using meta-analysis to adjust values of medals that were offered for sale on multiple occasions or where bidding occurred that the author feels was colored by bias on the part of one or more bidders.  By this I mean simply put, that an exorbitant price observed one time on ebay for an otherwise common medal was not included in the valuation range or median.

A commentary since the year 2000 when I published the first edition of this reference:  The collecting of state and local issue medals has remained a consistent and strong aspect of medal collecting, WWI is still the dominant area of interest with a somewhat lacking of interest in the small number of medals given for WWII service.  The ‘boom’ of collecting Spanish American War / Philippine Insurrection local issues has slackened somewhat and Ebay has shown that some that we considered scarce at one time are coming up for sale at least a little more often.  The medals given for service on the Mexican Border remain consistently strong in value with no sign of slowing.  As a side note, as I write this much is being done to research the awards by the state of New York and named and numbered pieces may be more readily researchable in the
near future.  That will add an interesting aspect to the collecting of NYS medals.
I noted in my first edition that I had a bias towards named medals and that the collecting community did not necessarily share that interest.  That has not changed and most local service medal collectors are type collectors with named pieces not commanding a premium with a few notable exceptions such as the Wyoming and Rochester, NY medals.  Another aside worth mentioning regards Navy issue WWI Federal Victory medals.  The discovery of a large horde of unissued bars after publication of my first volume has certainly colored that collecting field.  An occurrence such as that cannot be foreseen.

DELAWARE

STATE, WWI (NAMED).  It is believed 9,000 to 12,000 of these were struck making it one of the rarer of the State issue WWI awards.  The value of this and the Maryland WWI medal will continue to raise as collectors demand them to complete their “state run sets”.  The medal comes in two versions; on with an eagle surmounting the planchet, the other without and eagle.  Rarity is close between the two.  Deservedly so I might add as they are very difficult to find!  $150.00

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

          ATLANTA, MBS $175.00

          GRIFFIN, MBS $100.00

          SAVANNAH, MBS Named $125.00

*The ‘Georgia’ section is an excellent example of the idiosyncrasies of this price guide.  The Griffin medal is easily the rarest of the three.  However the $100.00 value is based on the price in a Harris list.  The Atlanta and Savannah prices are based on realized FJP auction prices.  These medals will bring more because of the geographic lure of these large population towns.

ASSORTED UNIT AND STATE MEDALS FOR WAR SERVICE:

I have tried to avoid listing medals that fall more into the category of being strictly reunion pieces with the exception of those like the 30th Division medal that is often seen in groups to veterans of the unit and must have also been seen at the time as a divisional veterans medal.

Unit medals:

FIRST CAVALRY USV “ROUGH RIDERS” REUNION MEDAL.  $1,500.00 if unnamed or i.d.ed, $2,500.00+ with solid attribution or name.

FIRST IRISH VOLUNTEERS. Rare and nearly medal for this NY SPAN-AM War unit.  One observed and realized a price of $441.00 in a 1998 Ebay internet auction.

FIRST MASS. CAVALRY TROOP A.  Lincoln MFG Boston watch fob.  $75.00

30TH DIV. WWI $60.00
