General John Hayes 9th Division HARD CORE RECONDO group
The 4/39 of the 9th Division was transformed by the LTC David Hackworth into one of the finest combat units of the Vietnam War.  Hackworth called his men Hard Core Recondo (nothing to do with the Special Forces Recondo school!). I highly recommend Hackworth's book Steel My Soldiers Hearts about his experiences with the 4/39.
He was very pleased when veteran soldier John Hayes took over command of the 1st Brigade of the 9th Division in Vietnam.  Hackworth had small number of these patches designed for his officer's.  The patch is accompanied by other material from General Hayes to include in-country made Col. eagle, jump wing, his early white name tape, Thai bullion jump wing, 1st pattern twill 9th patch, beercan unit crests and two copy 8x10 photo's of Hayes in Vietnam.
