UDC Southern Cross of Honor to Tennessee veteranResearching this one has been interesting and is in progress.
This Whitehead & Hoag cross is period engraved to J.G. STUART.  I find several references to J.G. Stuart... all from Tennessee and trying to tie them together as I'm certain they are the same man.  National Archives shows J.G. Stuart enlisting in Turney's First Tennessee Volunteer Infantry and other sources verify he was in Company I.  There is a wartime letter signed by Lt. J.G. Stuart of Tennessee posted in Fold3.  And finally the 1895 Confederate Veteran magazine notes the Cleveland, Tennessee UCV was organized under a local attorney and Mayor Col. J.G. Stuart!
