Posthumous 11th Airborne Silver Star Group
With Unique INFANTRY Air Medal
1st Lt. Varner Merkal served in HQ Co., 511th PIR, 11th Airborne Division and lost his life in the Philippines on 27 November 1944. This group includes his posthumous and officially named Silver Star, Bronze Star, Good Conduct, and rare Infantry issue Air Medal. Unfortunately, his posthumous Purple Heart is missing, location unknown. This is the first posthumously awarded Infantry Air Medal I have encountered! It was likely awarded for an aerial observer mission or missions though he is not noted to have been a Liaison Pilot or Field Artillery.
