Gettysburg Dug Gardiner Exploding Bullet
.58 caliber 3-groove bullet for the rifle musket with several distinctive characteristics. These were cast of pewter which was harder than lead and would fragment, a fuse would be inserted into the powder-filled copper vessel in the center of the bullet. The 2nd New Hampshire was issued the 'exploding musket shell' prior to Gettysburg.
The history of this shell is quite interesting with charges leveled against it's inventor for introducing an 'inhuman' weapon.
