6th Georgia Infantry Confederate Veteran's Shield
Civil War veterans badge of Private Robert Parker Gilmore of Butts County, GA. He enlisted on 5/27/1861 in "D" Co. GA 6th Infantry. The muster roll of Co. D reads "Gilmore, Robert Parker 'D' Private May 27, 1861. Detailed in Pioneer Corps. Wounded at Petersburg, Va., June 18, 1864."
Future governor of Georgia, Alfred H. Colquitt, was elected Colonel of the newly formed 6th Regiment. They fought in the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Antietam and in Stonewall Jackson's flank attack at the Battle of Chancellorsville. The unit saw action at battery Wagner near Charleston, SC, and the battle of Olustee, Florida. The regiment surrendered  Sherman's forces at Greenboro, NC on April 26, 1865.
