Civil War 11th Zouave CdV, Wartime Casualty
An excellent wartime CdV image of Union soldier in distinctive Zouave pattern coat.  Inscribed on obverse by Will Boyce. Boyce was from Marion County, Indiana. He enlisted 8/31/1861 in Co. A, 11th Indiana Infantry. Serving through to 1864 he became a member of the 11th Infantry Veteran Volunteers. Severely wounded in action on 9/19/1864 at Winchester, VA, he died of his wounds on 9/26/1864.
The 11th Indiana Infantry was raised in Indianapolis under Col. Lew Wallace in 1861 as a 90 day unit. Wallace trained the 11th Indiana in Zouave tactics, and the regiment became known as Wallace's Zouaves. The uniform consisted of a grey jacket with red trimming and a dark blue zouave vest. A later uniform consisted of a black zouave jacket with sky blue trimming. Engaged in the Battle of the Opequan / 3rd Battle of Winchester in September 1864, losing 81 killed and wounded.
