American Revolutionary War Era Dutch-Germanic Socket Bayonet
Overall a very nice example and comes with its scarce original scabbard. Bayonet shows age appropriate for an attic found 250-year-old relic with overall age pitting, a brown finish, and no damage. The scabbard is solid though without fittings, likely never had any.
A distinctive bayonet with an elliptical, spear point blade and for a large caliber musket. Refer to George Neumann’s Battle Weapons of the American Revolution on page 293 as example 44BB. Neumann notes that examples have been recovered at both French & Indian War and Revolutionary War sites.  Dutch made arms were imported to the American Colonies as well as used by Hessian troops during the Revolution. Several Dutch muskets were purchased by the British and provided to the Colony of South Carolina for use by the local militia. This might well explain this bayonet being from an estate in Columbia, SC.
Theside of the socket is engraved with the rack number  “No. 706”, the matching number would have been engraved on the wrist escutcheon of the musket that this bayonet was intended to mate with.
