The West Virginia Seventh Cavalry originally formed as the 8th W. VA Infantry. It transferred to the cavalry arm Jan. 27, 1864 and joined Gen. Crook's raid on the Virginia & Tennessee railroad in May. It fought at Cloyd's mountain and New River bridge, after which it joined Gen. Hunter for the movement against Lynchburg. The remainder of its service was in Virginia, chiefly in the Shenandoah Valley, and mustered out Aug. 1, 1865.
