FYI John Pemberton was a CSA Lt. Colonel serving in Columbia, Georgia in April 1865. Wounded by a saber in the chest, he became addicted to morphine. Seeking a cure, he began to experiment with painkiller alternatives and experimented with coca and created a recipe he dubbed Pemberton’s French Wine Coca. In 1886, Atlanta enacted temperance legislation and Pemberton produced a non-alcoholic alternative of coca syrup with carbonated water served as a fountain drink.
