Span-Am War Medical Officer's Silver Star+
Silver Star rim numbered #5472, officially engraved to THOMAS J. KIRKPATRICK. Further includes his attributed Spanish Campaign Medal rim.numbered No. 772 with rarely awarded Silver Citation Star in the drape. His attributed Philippine Campaign Medal is rim number No. 1046, and his Medical Corps dog tag is included.
Col. Thomas Kirkpatrick was a Captain in the Medical Corps serving at the Battle of Santiago where he aided wounded comrades under fire. He was awarded the Silver Citation Star to be worn on his Spanish Campaign Medal. This was the forerunner of the Silver Star Medal and the basis for his engraved Silver Star award.
Approximately 75,000 Silver Stars were awarded in WWII, I do not have a figure for pre-WWI awards however speaking with other collectors, it is under 100 awards putting it in a numismatic rarity on a par with the Medal of Honor.
