South Carolina Attributed Eagle Head Sword
South Carolina Civil War carried Federal eagle head sword
Tough to get pics of the well worn engraving that is found on the spine of the blade and on the guard backstrap. In hand, abbreviations for the rank of Colonel, Company F, S.C., and date 1862 are clear. After Co.F it appears to read "A/a" and the last name might be Neil?
Overall a very nice sword with the engraving faded and a break to the metal scabbard.
This piece came out of a York County, South Carolina estate sale several years ago and I assume he was an officer in the Mexican War or some capacity before the Civil War but the family could provide no history for the family member.
