His obituary notes he was charged with safely transporting Secretary of the Navy Franklin D. Roosevelt across the Atlantic in 1917.
The bar mounted group, a matching ribbon bar, his Captains epauletts and officer’s cap device are boxed as found at his estate and inscribed presumably by his wife on the top.
Navy Cross Citation: The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Commander Fred Halstead Poteet, United States Navy, for distinguished service in the exacting and hazardous duty of patrolling vitally important convoys of troops and supplies through these waters, and in offensive and defensive action, vigorously and unremittingly prosecuted against all forms of enemy naval activity during World War I.
