In 1866, the state of West Virginia authorized the minting of over 26,000 medals to honor the anyone who served in a West Virginia military unit during the Civil War. Each medal was named to the recipient and were struck with three top bars: HONORABLY DISCHARGED for anyone who served, FOR LIBERTY awarded to the next of kin of men who died of wounds or illness, and KILLED IN BATTLE awarded to the next of kin of KIA’s.
