1st Mass. Civil War Wound Badge Rare silver badge engraved on the upper shield “1st Regt. Mass. Vols “ having a long pin and drop suspended from a narrow ribbon. The minie' ball drop is engraved to “John W. Fairbanks Co.D" The Minnie ball is elaboratley decorated with the Massachusetts state seal and the battle honors of the 1st Mass. Inf. Regt. These include Blackburn’s Ford, Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Glendale, Malvern Hill, Bull Run and Fredericksburg. Period photo's provide evidence that these are wartime production. The inclusion of Fredricksbburg (Dec. 62) but lack of Chancellorsvill (May 63) in the battle honors dates them in the early part of 1863 and they are considered to be a wound badge for men of the 1st Mass. Infantry. Fairbanks was wounded in action 3/24/1863 with his Massachusetts regiment and in December of that year he transferred to the 89th US CT. An interesting discussion of these awards is found here. $3,000.00 SOLD
